The Mérida Cable Car required turnstiles at the each of the stations. The turnstiles needed to communicate to centrally located access control software that integrated to the ticketing software. To meet these requirements, the attraction chose Alvarado TAS12-EDC intelligent admission turnstiles and Alvarado’s GateLink10 access control software.

Alvarado provides access control for world’s highest cable car

Mérida-Venezuela_websizedFor nearly 50 years, Venezuela’s Mérida Cable Car rose higher and farther than any other aerial tramway in the world. Closed for repairs and renovation in 2008, this iconic attraction will soon reopen with all new technology, including Alvarado’s intelligent admission turnstiles and admission control software controlling access at the five stations located along the 12.5 kilometer aerial tram.

AM:PM 4 Solutions, an information technology consultant, collaborated with the Mérida Cable Car to develop a new ticketing system for the attraction. To provide access control turnstiles and software, AM:PM 4 Solutions contacted Alvarado, the USA’s leading provider of sports and entertainment admission systems.

The TAS12-EDC turnstiles (shown below) will allow riders to self-scan barcoded tickets. A bright color TFT display provides visual instructions to guide guests through the entry process. Onscreen graphics can be customized to incorporate sponsor logos, multi-language customer prompts and other desired messaging. In addition to scanning printed tickets, the turnstiles also support the validation of mobile tickets displayed on a smart phone to allow for a smooth transition to digital ticketing.

“AM:PM 4 used our Gatelink10 API to integrate their ticketing software with our GateLink10 platform,” said Bill Voss, Senior Sales Engineer at Alvarado. “The integration was accomplished very quickly, allowing them to focus on other aspects of the system.”

The turnstiles are in the process of being installed and final preparations are underway for the reopening of the Mérida Cable Car later this year.

Alvarado entertainment admission products are installed at hundreds of locations worldwide. Alvarado produces its turnstiles and admission products at its manufacturing and R & D facility located in Chino, CA.
