Optical turnstiles improve flow for city of Houston’s 1,200 employees

Background

The city of Houston, Texas is a vibrant community committed to providing quality infrastructure for its citizens.

In 2007, its public works and engineering department was growing rapidly and they needed a better way to manage ingress/egress for employees and visitors. They came to Alvarado for a solution.

Challenge

The city wanted a better method of getting its 1,200+ employees in and out of the building in a timely manner.

Originally, every employee was required to present identification to the guard staff in order to gain entry. This process was slow, caused long lines in the morning and during lunch and the guard staff required to verify each credential was expensive.

“The turnstiles allowed us to reduce guard staff and keep them focused on visitors.”
– Alan Goodman, Security Management – City of Houston

Solution

After discussing specific requirements with City officials, Alvarado recommended multiple sets of its Supervisor 3000 optical turnstiles.

The optical turnstiles were able to tie in with the existing access control system and could easily provide access to thousands of employees per hour. 11 lanes were installed in the main lobby and an additional five were placed in the underground parking garage.

Alvarado Advantage

Every optical turnstile from Alvarado is designed to easily integrate with almost any access control system. This provides for greater flexibility if a customer changes access systems in the future.

Alvarado tests each turnstile prior to shipment to ensure the highest level of accuracy and reliability. Investment cast components and quality materials ensure increased durability and longer life.

Impact

The city of Houston instantly saw a reduction in man hours for its guard staff and estimates that the turnstiles effectively manage over 3,000 entries per day.

Guards no longer needed to check each credential, but were able to remain focused on visitors. The turnstiles also provided effective elimination of unauthorized entry (tailgating).
